Designer Alexandra: Founder of “SOPHIA Enjoy Thinking”

«SOPHIA Enjoy Thinking» is a brand of the designer Alexandra created in the heart of the economic and social crisis in Greece, to offer all of us a new air of optimism.

How did the idea of creating "Sophia" come up?

"SOPHIA Enjoy Thinking"  was born three years ago from the need to highlight within and especially outside the borders, the beautiful side of Greece and its culture through contemporary design.

What is the philosophy and aim of your venture?

The aim is to promote the cultural heritage of our country around the world and to incorporate the brilliant ideas of yesterday to today. We have accomplished so far with our presence in international design exhibitions such as the Maison & Objet in Paris and the Top Drawer in London and to major stores, concept stores and shops of museums, such as the British Museum, the Louvre Museum and the Ghetty.

Why did you choose as «Enjoy Thinking» as your motto;

That is because we firmly believe that "thinking" is a driving force, where through this one can change oneself as well as change the world around him. Our goal is not only the aesthetics, quality and functionality but also to highlight important concepts that will make someone "think".

What are your main inspirations?

The pressures and twists in the race that we call “life” have made humans everywhere around the world turn nostalgically back to times that have withstood the test of time, to values that have remained stable and timely. For the Greek designer Alexandra, such an era could not have been anything else but the classical Greece. She listened carefully to the invaluable heritage of ancient Greece, the wise sayings of the philosophers and the magnificent statues and chose those that inspired her and made her think and ponder to create the first collection of SOPHIA Enjoy Thinking "Eternity Today". Her original accessories compose spaces of modern designing and cosmopolitan atmosphere with ancient times making a charming, current and always new presence.

The second collection of SOPHIA called "Philosophia" is inspired by the universality of the Greek language. Original, different and bold, bearing discreetly and with elegance its Greek identity. Decorative house ware, porcelain sets, artwork and lifestyle items and stationery host picked Greek words such as “harmony”, “dialogue”, “utopia”, “ecstasy”- that no foreigner needs a dictionary to look up their meaning. This year the collection is framed by four new terms used: “psychology”, “psychotherapy”, “psyche” and “physiology”- arising from the international scientific vocabulary.

 

What can one find today under the brand name “Sophia”?

Our collections consisting of many different types: decorative and utilitarian: pillows, art de la table, notebooks, games to make one think, bookends and statues.

Why do you think people abroad have greeted “Sophia” with so much enthusiasm?

As we all already know foreigners admire and respect all these concepts we are trying to spread. They are excited by the fact that our products combining art with the design and the classic with the freshness of the contemporary, allow the story to "escape" from museums and be accommodated in a modern and comfortable home.

Do you think that as a country we have any Greek design to promote abroad?

Of course if it is a sort of challenge under the shadow of nowadays crisis. But we are daily excited by the creative possibilities arising from the cosmic turbulence that we are experiencing these days. The Greek creativity is but an asset that we should turn. It stems from the hunt for thrills and constant contact with our heritage in any way it may be expressed.

How do you feel about the fact you managed to enter “Sophia” into major museums such as the Louvre and the British ones?

Very happy!

What are your plans from now on?

To carry on exporting the Greek spirit and to support the local economy and society, insisting on remaining and producing in Greece.
