Effie Gavrilos: Founder of «The Greek Imp»

Effie Gavrilos may have started as a philologist and written many successful stories and scenarios, but one of her greatest inspirations ultimately proved to be the «The Greek Imp». The t-shirts that have made the mythical monsters a “fashion” are spreading like crazy and being made into coasters, handbags and stylish magnets.

How did you come up with the idea to create "The Greek Imp"?

The idea of the Greek Imp came after a trip to Peru. There I spotted a company that made original humorous souvenirs linking tradition with modern Peru. I realized that there was not anything similar in Greece. The dice was cast and in 2013 started the little Greek elfin (The Greek Imp). The first group, the creative one, was composed by Stefanos Koltsidopoulos, Spyros Derveniotis, Nestor Kechagias and me. We relied on the concept "the mythical monsters in the contemporary summer," defined the sketch of «The Greek Imp» and then we built the characters of the Minotaur as a cook, the Cyclops as a taxi driver, Medusa as a clubber, Hydra as a bather and Amalthea as ... a hopping pavilion. Leda Michalopoulos and Peter Matthew worked on the texts. Then Christos Argyropoulos and Stella Tosounidis took over who coordinated the sales and after having checked the response of the public we proceeded  in 2015 with our participation in trade fairs.

What made you choose this name?

It is a playful: «Imp», like our mood, declares  “Greek” identity, its uniqueness: «The» along with the logo design by pi6 completes our picture. This year Nestor made the sketch of this little devil.

Why mythical monsters?

The mythical monsters represent the fears and anxieties of the people. They were there to cause their awe, just like the ancient Greek past fills with awe, real or acquired, the modern Greek. We reject this awe, reconcile with our fears and recommend our creative spirit. The Greek mythology is a world heritage, is well known both inside as well as outside the country, ideal for humorous illustration, and in particular enables us to express the above- mentioned symbolism.

Where does your inspiration of what your slogan quotes as «twist the myth» come from;

We turned the myth the other side, we saw it ... upside down. We worked with something that frightened the people so as to create monsters who enjoy the Greek summer. Our aim was to "change what scares us",  to tame it, to be familiarized with it.

Why do you think people have singled out these shirts?

Everyone identifies the playful side of themselves with The Greek Imp. People like this twist, they like recognizing in our plans the mythical monsters so often encountered in frightening images. They identify themselves with this change that has taken place at the once menacing image and feel happy to "wear" the different look.

What do your latest additions of your collection include?

This year we introduced in our production notepads and key rings bearing the illustration of... The Greek Imp.

What are your business plans from now on?

We have already spread to foreign markets and this is one of our key objectives for the future, while we want to enrich our collection with more concepts in the same sense. Since we have established ourselves as the brand that represents the past with humor, we can seamlessly continue our pious work (the latter said with a Tsarist bombast).
